The goal of this study is to examine the ways that individuals use mediated spaces and, in particular, online gaming, to generate new friendships and/or maintain existing ones. The results indicate that High-ES gamers use mediated spaces differently than their non-ES counterparts, and this appears to translate into tangible differences in their friendship networks.

A multi-wave panel study was conducted using an omnibus sampling approach and included respondents aged 18 years or older who reported being an active online gamer. Data was collected via computer-assisted telephone interviewing. As part of this survey, participants were asked to report on their gaming habits and whether they had made friends online or transferred offline friendships into a mediated space (online gaming). The final sample consisted of 395 individuals.
